It's almost VALENTINE'S DAY! How excited are you?! It's my all time very most super favorite day of the year. Nothing could be better than a day full of love, kisses, presents, and dressing up. Do you celebrate V-day by wearing your heart on your sleeve? How about an update on that old adage... Check out this quick and fun project we did on our Current Elliott Skinny Trousers:

With Evy's assistance, this took about ten minutes (minus drying time).

1. Try on your jeans and put a little mark right at the center of each knee.

2. Draw half of a heart on a sheet of sticky stuff. We used duct tape, but contact paper would work fine too.

3. Fold in half and cut out from the center, so your heart is uniform on both sides.

4. Peel off back and stick to jeans. Place sticky heart cut-out directly over your knee markings.

5. Fill in your hearts with red fabric paint. Sponge or brush works well.

6. Let dry.

7. Peel off and admire your handy work! :)

Spring me the glitter...

If it looks like Spring, and feels like Spring...

I know we're still technically in the throes of Winter- I'm reminded of this every morning when I look out the window and see that my poor little flowers have struggled through another cold night. But the days are bright, warm, and glowing. What does this have to do with the outfit post? Well, we've had the most unbelievably beautiful weather this week, that I find myself in a very Spring-y mindset! Kinda sorta. It's a hybrid... let me explain. Remember all the glitter, sequins and bedazzle we saw through the Holidays? Well, I'm secretly really excited about it still! There's that quote about glitter being the herpes of the art world- and yeah, I guess that extends to fashion, but... I can't help it.

I'm infected with sparkles!

The color Gods at Pantone tells us that Tangerine Tango is the it color for 2012, but I'm not on board with that just yet. Outside of my Rhodia notebooks, anyway... However, I do find myself really attracted to the saturated jewel tones we normally reserve for Holiday... pops of garnet, sapphire, amethyst, emerald, chalcedony, and a little turquoise. We typically see these hues with darker pairings of satin, wool, or (that ubiquitous Holiday fabric...) velvet. For Spring I like these colors lightened up and paired with creams, cotton lace, and eyelet.

For the time being, I'm still in jeans almost every day, but I'm pairing them with sparkly shoes, lots of baubles, and overly-embellished hair accessories (like the headband and sequined barrettes seen here). As the weather warms up, I'll be moving into full skirts with quirky little sweaters (like the one in this one by Charlotte Tarantola), but I'll stick with my sparkly shoes and girly accessories at least until Summer time.

Ok, let's talk about this skirt... Dost thou eyes deceive thee? No. That, my friends, is gold lamé. Poor lamé got a really bad rap back in the 80's when it became de rigueur for horrendous ruffled, one-shouldered, Prom dresses. I know you know what I'm talking about, ladies... But I'm liberating it! I got this vintage Esprit skirt specifically for the Ambiance Holiday party- but it's way too fabulous to be a one trick pony! Toned down for daytime with flats, a fitted sweater, and a cotton tote, the gold borders on neutral. In fact, I'm coining a new phrase right now... are you listening, Pantone? The neutral statement piece. YES! Fluorescent neutral! I actually championed for Fluorescent Neutral a couple of years ago when I solicited (unsuccessfully) for Montana Paint to rename one of their spraypaints that color. They totally missed out.

What about you... still knee-deep in Winter wear, or are you fast fowarding to Spring? The only thing I'm knee deep in right now is glitter. *surrenders cool card* : /

Of course we all know that now more than ever, it's so important to support our mom & pop local shops. But the constant bombardment of DEALS, SPECIAL OFFERS, and CAN'T-MISS CLEARANCE PRICES in my email inbox makes it really hard sometimes. It's tough to resist the convenience of shopping in my jammies after the kids are in bed, and merchandise delivered right to my door. No crowds, no craziness, no fuss.

But guess what... eventually this convenience costs us something.

No more mom & pop.

It makes me sad to imagine that our sweet, quaint town is under threat of corporate siege- but it's very true. Unless we make an effort to *ahem* get out of our jammies, off our couches, and out the door, those adorable shops, boutiques, and specialty stores that make SLO so darn cool will be edged out by the giants. I'm doing my part by focusing on locally-owned businesses for my Holiday shopping, and for the outfits that inspire me to get dressed! 'Cos you know what... Papyrus won't be inviting you in for a Holiday Party, Victoria's Secret won't be throwing a free pair of panties in your bag- just because they love you, the people at the GAP won't give you a hug and ask about your mom, and don't expect the Starbucks Barristas to make super awesome foam art in your latte- just 'cos.

Hey, I'll tell you something else... as someone who lives and works downtown, you should know that there really aren't any crowds to contend with, and there are some truly amazing pre-Christmas deals going on right now. Even the parking spaces have been pretty plentiful lately!

Excuses, excuses... Yeah, what else ya got? ;)

Our November it-girl and lovely friend, Carla, was sweet enough to let me trail around as she put the finishing touches on SLO's newest retail/design addition.

ATMODSPHERE is surely the most beautiful example of mid-century modern home furnishings in town. Recognize this space? Mid-Cent Mod fans have been eyeing it for months, first in admiration of its structural and cosmetic face-lift, and more recently for the amazing inventory that's trickled in behind locked doors. Including furnishings by super, incredible, ohmygosh, Jory Brigham!

Local architect extraordinaire, George Garcia did such an exquisite job retrofitting and redesigning this darling Chorro St. building while maintaing its character and keeping the past 100 years or so of worn-in loveliness entirely intact. Like a pair of vintage Levi's carefully mounted and framed on a wall- it's all about showcasing the great bones, and appreciating the wear and tear, while admiring the careful addition of fresh, clean lines, and subtly artistic details. It's an absolute gem, and the perfect example of building-marries-business bliss.

Major design-crush on this one, people. Major.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S NOVEMBER?!

Yesterday my flower boxes were full of little pearls of hail! I jumped up and down like crazy person excitedly proclaiming "IT'S SNOWING!" until my children corrected me. :( The next logical step? Pull on my trusty rubber boots, hop, skip, and puddle-jump my way over to AMBIANCE, of course! I had my eye on the cozy little leopard topper in that photo of Alex up above. One word... perfection. I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping, working, wearing it around the house, and finally... I ended the day with a few art shows- leopard beret firmly intact. A great example of the sort of affordable, functional, and chic accessories that can really elevate an ensemble and feel truly special. Shout out to Danielle at Finders Keepers, who spotted it and wasted no time snatching one of her own. She knows a good buy when she sees it. If you don't know Diane Fleming, you are missing out! I had the pleasure of sitting down with her this week, bugging her with my off-beat q+a, and doing a couple of laps around the shop with this gorgeous woman. Given the opportunity, I'd highly recommend you do the same.

Here's what I learned:

1. Diane is ridiculously talented.

She's been painting for nearly 40 years. Daily, weekly... consistently. Talk about a dedication to your craft!

2. Diane is a fashionista.

She's so incredibly on-trend, and hip to the fashion game- that at any moment she might be
snatched off the sidewalk, and exported to Hollywood to become the next major celebrity stylist. "I love fashion. I've been shopping in Ambiance for about 15 years!" Trolling the racks with her is like a crash-course in what-to-wear à la mode.

3. Diane is a leopard-lover, a knitter, and a bit of a magpie.

Purring through the racks in this Season's coveted Current Elliott leopard Stilletto jeans, she instructs, "Every woman needs some leopard in her wardrobe". Her attention to detail is impeccable- inspecting a plush sweater she holds it close to point out the quality of the knit, "I'm a knitter, so I appreciate the work put into this piece." Suddenly she spies a black top, sequined to within an inch of its life... "Oooh, I love how this glitters. Sometimes you just need a little sparkle!", she muses.

4. Diane is inspired, and inspiring.

Taking her greatest inspiration from fashion and the human form, she worked for nearly six weeks on the Untitled, mixed-media piece, which is currently taking pride of place in AMBIANCE. "It's taken from a recent Vogue spread, actually. I just tweaked it", she laughs - as though anyone can do this. You know, no big deal...

5. Diane is a sweetheart, and she exemplifies what it means to be a lady.

After a little scheduling conflict, she presented me with a lovely bottle of wine for my troubles (which were really no trouble at all). But check out the manners on this woman, and take note.

A few of my favorite marinière moments...

There are a few French basics that never go out of style: Repettos, K. Jacques, ballet flats, slim black capri pants, Bensimon's, Gitanes, and the perfect striped t-shirt - "la marinière." It always looks just right, and you can never have too many.

Unconvinced? See: Coco Chanel, Jean Seberg, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Edie Sedgwick, and just about every other iconically chic woman in the world. It's an adorable culmination of all things clean, classic, striped, nautical and timeless.

I love this look, skirted for Spring, with tailored shorts for Summer, layered with a crisp blazer and jeans for Fall, and hiding under scarves, wool trousers, and warm trench coats for Winter.

Here's what I know about the French favorite... "marinière", or the Breton shirt.
The long-sleeved striped cotton garment (traditionally, the stripes begin around the breastbone and it has a boat neck). You know the one, you should probably have 2 or 3 — justifiably, as all are different (to the keen eye, at least).

The Breton striped shirt originated in Brittany— a French province that occupies the peninsula between the English Channel and Bay of Biscay. It's the traditional garment of choice among French fishermen— which may explain its nautical affiliation. And incidentally, the shirt bears a striking resemblance to the Brittany flag.

2010's infatuation with Military fashion was saturated by ARMY and Air Force styling, meaning naval-influenced pieces went largely overlooked. As the military trend winds down for spring 2011, and we turn to new influences - the nautical may be overlooked entirely. But I don't despair. In fact, I tend not to think of the marinière as a strictly nautical or military trend. I prefer, rather, to see its timelessness. Its long-lived contribution to fashion and its perfect palette of simplicity, comfort, fun, and easy elegance.

Pattern mixing comes and goes in various incarnations- like all things fashion-related... but I'm so happy to welcome it back like an old friend. While it's not for everyone, I absolutely adore this trend for Spring. It reminds me of that carefree (read: naïve) feeling of being a little kid and mixing your very favorite pink floral puff-sleeved blouse with your very favorite Sanrio Keroppi-printed stretch pants and a hair ribbon tied around your waist as a belt. You know, hypothetically... *ahem*

Anyway, it's awesome. It feels very loose, and Springy, and... not-taking-yourself-so-damn-seriously! My favorite. ♥

Lauren Santo-Domingo is killing me with her hotsy totsy gold heels for daytime,
with floral pencil skirt and (oh my gosh, you know it's real) python bag. Damn, girl!

Parisian princess goes to the office? Yes, please!
Polka dots and red lips make me swoony.

I never, ever include commentary on menswear, but I'm pretty sure this
guy raided his adorbs girlfriend's closet so he could look equally adorbs.
The marinières striped shirt would've been so cute with the khaki pants,
but he took it to another level when he threw on the embroidered floral jacket.
Amazing.

Again, not my usual fare- and I have this weird thing about men in bracelets...

Also, who would ever guess that this suited-up Italian would have a
gnarly tattoo up his sleeve??? I love this contradictory attitude so much-

When Meryl Streep uttered that (now infamous) phrase in The Devil Wears Prada, I snickered at the blunt and blatant accuracy of it. Simple, true... biting! I'm not going to analyze a movie quote here, I just wanted to point out that I've been thinking a lot lately about trends, seasons, and the general pace of this industry. The older I get, the less concerned I am with keeping up and the more interested I am in investment pieces that will float from season to season, and year to year, with ease. Obviously my wants and needs change throughout the year- but at this age I know what I like and what flatters and inspires me, and no amount of runway, marketing, celebrity endorsements, press push, or trending, influences any of it. Free at last!

Today it made me think about that movie quote because- you know what? I love florals for Spring. I love them bold, bright, big, and unapologetic... I love them little, subtle, hinted-at, and light... I want them in my house, my hair, my salads, my window boxes, and yes- sometimes in the fabric swishing around me. I never gave them much thought until I moved to a climate with actual, temperature-changing seasons. In fact, what little thought I did give them was tainted by gaudy images of poly-blend matching sets for tourists. But after enduring months of cold, wet, and grey- florals, sunshine, and cottony, gauzy goodness feel like the reward for making it through another icky Winter.

Oooh... I am so feeling these light, breezy pieces for Spring...

I love her dark-palette pattern mixing and the belt that anchors this sweet, movable look with a good dose of solidity.

I've obsessed over this photo since last Spring- but that just proves my theory about age and finding the pieces that you'll want to come back to again and again. Plus, I absolutely adore how adept these Italian girls are at making stacks and tons of jewelry look so effortless and casual.

At first glance you're thinking "What? Too much!"- but I'm telling you, this is the freshest and most fluent way I've seen a maxi dress worn. The color isn't in-your-face and the pattern isn't killing your eyes. She's so unrestricted and fluid, yet the result is regal rather than muʻumuʻu.

This is another one saved from early last year. The epitome of femininity (her dress, her ballerina top-knot, and her pink cheeks) and the contrast of well-worn Converse on a grated metal stoop... I love it so much. I tried a version of this on my Paris trip with a soft, Indian cotton, vintage dress that I picked up for about $12 on the left bank, and my grey Bensimon lace ups. I thought about this photo a lot that day.

This look feels the most ingrained in me. I found a photo of myself from a 5th grade art class recently- wearing something pretty identical, but with a weird, old, felted brown hat thrown in. Hmmm... I went through a very Prairie dress/brown boots phase in 5th grade. I've revisited the look several times since then, and it remains a soft spot. But isn't it just kind of precious? She looks so fragile and sweet, and yet also like she could just kick Miranda Priestly in the teeth for mocking her floral dress.

I can only hope that at their age I am owning my style and personal character the way these extraordinary women are. I hope I'm rocking bakelite eyeglasses like Iris Apfel, and an out of-this-world silvery, Bauhaus bob too. I hope I'm still a bike rider, and on a sweet-ass Bianchi at that!

"When I first moved to New York [from Seattle] I attended a screening for the documentary Hats Off about Mimi Weddell, who in her 60s became an actress and model for the likes of Louis Vuitton and Burberry. I photographed her, and her attitude and approach to style was a big influence on me and the start of the blog.

Walking around New York taking photographs, I noticed how many young girls are appropriating style from older women: leopard print, fur, turbans and hats. In general, the older women wear these things naturally, with more confidence. Here's what I know about... AG Jeans!

I love jeans. They're by far the most versatile item in my closet, and my personal favorite too. Shhh... don't tell the shoes! But my AG Jeans have blown every other pair out of the water. I could list the dozen or so brands left pouting on the shelf since the AG's moved in, but I'll save them the embarrassment. AG has everything I'm after... fit, lift, comfort, and they are without a doubt, the softest, most beautifully flattering denim I've ever owned. Unless it's a serious crisis-of-a-laundry-day, I don't see myself wearing any other brand any time soon.

But that's just scratching the surface of these amazing jeans and the company behind them. I can feel good in them for so many reasons, not least of which is the moral and ecological commitment I'm making just by wearing them.

Ok, ready for a little shop talk? Here's what I know about AG Jeans:

Did you know that in Los Angeles County, a woman stitching a pair of jeans earns as much as $15 an hour? While in China, her counterpart pulls in 68 cents to 88 cents. Los Angeles— the largest clothing manufacturing hub in the nation, and mecca for high-end denim manufacturing— is no stranger to the tumultuous forces of globalization. With China, Mexico, and even tiny Mauritius nipping at their heels, domestic manufacturers have been left little choice but to take their business overseas in effort to compete with an ever-increasing demand for lower manufacturing costs. The innocent casualty of all this? QUALITY.

Premium denim has been a rare hold-out in the crumbling domestic apparel market. Why? The big "Q" of course... In Los Angeles, experienced sewing contractors are absolute masters of their trade. Normally jeans are rinsed with large amounts of water to rid them of excess indigo, and toxic chemicals are applied to create fades while cleaning up indigo bleeds on pocket linings. "I wanted to be kind of romantic, and give my cowboy boots a break. I really wanted to wear red shoes, and I wanted them to stand out. I'm wearing a lacy Nanette Lepore shrug, with a vintage black cotton corset top underneath, Nicole Miller lace tights, BB Dakota skirt, and my red Tory Burch flats."

What's your beauty look today?

"Minimal, which is pretty typical for me. I don't like to wear make up everyday. A little light pink MAC eye shadow, purple liner, LaNatura organic shea butter for lips- in pomegranate (it's amazing), and eyelash extensions. The extensions are like magic, so I really don't need anything else!"

What's your daily beauty regimen?

There are always a few moments every season of New York Fashion Week that blow us away and rekindle our love affair with the artistry and brilliance of fashion and beauty. They’re the designers and artists who push boundaries, expand our imaginations and redefine what we think of beauty, fashion and design.

Vena Cava’s runway show on opening day of New York Fashion Week was one of those moments. And no, it wasn’t the clothes (although those were fabulous too). Rather, it was the nails – if you can even call them that – designed by Butter LONDON’s Nonie Creme.

Using Butter LONDON’s chemical-free and vegan nail lacquers to paint right on the skin, Nonie pushed the boundaries of “nail art” to the outer limits – literally – by, expanding the nail canvas, as she explained, “taking over real estate from the skin.” Blurring the line between nail art and jewelry, Nonie created jewelry from nail polish by using Butter LONDON’s polishes to draw finger bands, or concentric rings of nail color painted around the models’ fingers, between the first knuckle and nail bed. Drying as a stunning, shiny lacquer (unlike body paint), the finger bands expand how we think about nail polish, jewelry and makeup.

How to recreate the finger bands at home:

- Start with clean, dry, lotion-free skin so the polish won’t crack.

- Pick an area between the first knuckle and nail bed where the skin doesn’t move push (to prevent pre-mature cracking and chipping).

- Immediately before painting, swipe skin with acetone

- Then carefully paint the first ring all the way around the finger, like a ring worn on the part of your finger where it would normally fall off.

- If your hands are shaky, we found it easier to hold the brush steady and move the finger being painted in a circular motion. This is especially helpful when painting your non-dominant hand. You can also use tape to mark off the area and peel it away after the polish is dry for perfect lines.

- Before painting a concentric ring, allow the first ring to dry a bit in order to prevent the colors from bleeding.

- Use restraint! At Vena Cava, Nonie painted 1 band per finger (either a single ring or double, made with 2 concentric rings) and just 2 fingers per hand – otherwise, as Nonie explains, it will start to look “tribal,” rather than “rocker.”

- Keep the actual nails clean and short. Nonie used Butter LONDON’s Hard Wear.

The bands take about 10 minutes to dry on the skin (similarly to how long polish takes to dry on the nails) and will last about 24 hours.

This is definitely one of my favorite emerging trends for Spring. How refreshing to not take fashion so seriously for once- but in a cute, subtle way! Have fun with your polish, and feel good about using a "3 Free" product.

Q: How do you come up with so many amazing Fashion forward colors each season?

NC: Thank you! I work directly with many fashion designers to crate custom nail colour for their shows at Fashion Week. I use what I learn there to stay ahead of the curve with fashion and colour trend, and it’s my mission to bring truly high fashion nail colours to the marketplace.

Q: Any insider tips for DIY lacquer lovers (those that can’t make it to a salon every week) on giving themselves a great manicure?

NC: Top tip for painting- using your thumb, gently pull the skin away from each fingertip when painting, and apply a little lacquer to the end of every fingernail, wrapping the colour all the way around the underneath of the nail. Then apply the rest of your shade as normal. Let nails dry before applying a topcoat (ALWAYS use a top coat). Your nails should last 1-3 days longer than normal!

Granted this isn't our typical fashion-devoted post, but as you know we're pretty big fans of the color pink around here- so when I spotted this months' House Beautiful issue (devoted to our favorite rosy hue), I just had to share. This chilly rain and dark gray sky has me feeling a wee bit color-deprived. These pretty-in-pink images are exactly what I needed to remind me that warm sun, bright cotton dresses, and fresh flowers are just around the corner. BRING ON THE SPRING!!!

What We're Wearing...

I had a chance to sit down and chat with Kannyn this week, and subsequently nudge her into posing for our latest "What We're Wearing" profile. Though reluctant to get in front of the camera, she's sucessfully making the fifth month of pregnancy look pretty darn adorable. She offered up some great fashion insight and her always-enviable style is definitely NOT on maternity leave. Pregnant or not, take note, ladies... this is how it's done.

Q. What you're wearing today...

A. My vintage jeans, and loose-knit tee, Charlotte Tarantola layering tank, Tigerlily jewelry, and black scarf- because I'm always freezing! My Tory Burch flats (REALLY comfortable, and I'm a sucker for that label), and my old Tylie Malibu bag.

Q. Kannyn, describe your fashion philosophy for me...

A. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but the predominate thing for me right now is comfort. I've been feeling a little bit lazy fashion-wise. I'm relying on silk tops paired with my jeans to look pulled-together without making a big effort. And jewelry... jewelry helps to dress up any outfit and draw attention away from my pregnant belly.

Q. What's topping your wishlist right now?

A. I'm obsessed with all of our Diane von Furstenberg pieces, especially the dress in our window. They're so cute, and SO flattering. Unfortunately, I can't quite wear them right now though- so they'll have to stay on the wishlist for a while.

Q. Describe your beauty regimen...

A. Epicuren Herbal Cleanse and Brazillian Propolis Lotion for my face. Mac eyeliner, Smashbox mascara, and Nars blush. Bumble & Bumble shampoo and conditioner. Moroccan Oil- great for those mornings when I don't have time to blow-dry... just smooth it on, tame the mane and go!

Q. What's been on repeat on your iPod lately?

A. The album Martin And Me, by J. Mascis. It's nostalgic, and acoustic... it just sounds so good to me right now.

Q. What's in your handbag today?

A. Oh my gosh... Preggie Pops, pretzels, lotion, stuff from the last fashion market, a camera, my make-up bag, my olive green Hobo wallet, lip gloss AND Chap Stick, hair ties, iPod earphones and a notebook.

Q. What are you most excited about for 2011?

A. I always like the start of a new year because new beginnings mean new opportunities to implement change and set goals. I'm looking forward to having my baby. And I'm excited about all the changes in the store.

This socks and heels business?

I'm kinda on the fence. On one hand, I love the girlishness of it, and you know- I'm a sucker for anything conjuring the Fruits images of Harajuku* and the coquette street-wear girls. But on the other hand, I feel like unless you've got insanely long legs, this particular ankle break can really cut you down to size in a very unflattering line. Also, personally it's hard for me to have a bare leg in a full-coverage shoe; something about it feels very hard to wear for me- but I'll spare you that tangent. Though I must say, that slouchy sweater sock (second from last) at the Michael Kors Paris show might sway me. YUM!

A. This dress! It's fun and flirty and very comfortable, which is important for me. I feel unique and special in the dress, I wore it on my birthday and got a million compliments.

A. Boots and skinny jeans. Some women have a hard time transitioning into skinny jeans, but it's a very flattering look for every body type if you learn how to pair it correctly.

Q. What's inspiring you for Fall 2010?

A. My customers inspire me. As I get older, I find myself wanting to embrace my age and dress in a way that flatters it. I see so many of my customers doing it, and I'm inspired to follow suit. It means higher quality pieces... silks, knits, and expert cuts. We have a lot of luxurious pieces in the store right now from 1520, Nanette Lepore and Joie- I feel so feminine and pretty in them.

Q. Alex, you're crushing on this gorgeous blue coat- tell me why...

A. I love the colors in this coat! Rich, and full of mustards and reds; that color-wheel works with anything. And the beautiful cut! Desigual is always different, always flattering, always comfy.

Q. What would you like to see your customers in this Fall?

A. I want my customers in layers, and lace, and ruffles. Lots of head accessories, appliques... chunky boots, buckles and other fun adornments!

Q. What's inspiring you for Fall?

A. Furs... I'm obsessed with fur and fringe this season. Mustard hues, oxford shoes, boyfriend jeans, basic tees, and leather! Dolce and Gabbana's collection... all things warm and cozy.

Q. Jennie, tell me about this great outfit...

A. I love the military cargo pants by Desigual because they don't add weight and they're super cute with short booties, which are my favorite this season. The plaid drop-waist flannel with embroidered flowers is so great, and it can double as a dress or a shirt!

Q. What are you excited to see your customers in this season?

A. Really, truly, I want to get them into some cargos, with a little bootie or oxford and an amazing jacket with a simple tee underneath.

Q. What's your style inspiration this Fall?

A. Navajo princess, traveling the urban plains in chunky knit sweaters, bad ass boots, and cargos for all the tools she'll need on her journey!

Q&A with Artist/Designer, Anastasia Thompson of "Heaven" & "Sacred Treasures"

ANASTASIA THOMPSON has been creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry by hand for more than 25 years. She holds a firm place as one of the foremost designers on the Central Coast. Her instantly-recognizable work sets both she and the lucky wearer apart from the crowd.

Her most recent line of jewelry brings her passion of antique and vintage devotional pieces to life, as she creates new designs with these treasures she loves collecting. It is these works of art that inspire the designs for her hand-painted clothing line.

Ambiance is proud to feature such a creative and dynamic woman in this, our first ever artist profile.

Q. Hi Stasi! Please briefly describe your creative process, from concept to finish...

A. Well, that is hard to say, as the hunting is the first part... estate sales, flea markets, etc... for vintage chains and such. After getting back to the studio, the focal pieces speak to me... then things just come together. At that point it could be hours or merely moments.

Q. What do you hope to convey with your work?

A. What I'm doing is breathing new life into reclaimed vintage items. Once each piece is lovingly re-created, it is cherished again for years to come.

Q. In terms of inspiration, what are you excited about right now?

A. Well, I have always tried to be true to my real passion which is antique devotional relics. Then designing new, wearable art from them. But my latest creations have been from finding beautiful, eclectic vintage objects; and with a more organic approach, turning these discovered treasures into environmentally responsible, intimate creations. Hence the name, "Sacred Treasures”.

Q. What first inspired you to become an artist/designer?

A. As a child I excelled in art... it was truly a gift from God; and I have always felt the need to share it in a positive way.

Q. What handmade possession do you cherish most?

A. My grandparents were artists as well and I have many of their handmade treasures. If I had to chose just one it would have to be a beautiful carving of a praying Mary that my grandfather carved out a single piece of wood.

Q. Apart from creating things, what do you do?

A. I am a singer and a drummer, and I love to play and record music with my husband, who is a guitar player, songwriter and recording genius.

Q. Finish this sentence: "In 10 years, I'd like to be..."

A. A working artist known for making art that touches people in a way that it does to me while I am creating it.

The Desigual project sprang to life in 1984. At the age of just 20, Thomás Meyer already had a clear idea in mind. He wanted a fun, original product at an affordable price. His first slogan was “Desigual is just not the same” and 20 years on, this continues to be the challenge and philosophy that guides his label. BRRR!! How did it get so chilly so fast?!

Thankfully the cooler weather gives us all a chance to put on those cute Fall sweaters, coats, and boots we've been waiting to wear! :)

A. I'm loving our scarves for Fall. You know why? It's like a blanket for your neck and the easiest way to give your outfit a price-conscious boost.
Q. Jennie, same question...

A. I would love to see my customer in a pair of distressed skinny jeans with any of our tunic length tees and a buttery-soft cashmere sweater. I'd also love to see her pair that with any of our mixed-metal jewelry such as, our Twisted Silver line, one of Michelle Perlich's newest pieces, or a statement piece from Kostas.

Q. Erika, what do you love for Fall?

A. The distressed skinny jeans from TAG, the ruffled Fluxus vests, our new boyfriend-length, Charlotte Tarantola sweaters, any of the Hard Tail coziness and tons of Twisted Silver.

Right now we're working very hard *ahem* to get 84 brand new pieces of Hard Tail out on the floor for you. Pegah Anvarian won the hearts of some of Hollywood's chicest celebs (Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie, Charlize Theron) before shuttering her 5-year-old namesake label last fall. But clearly nobody fell harder for the designer's supple draped jerseys and edgy denims than execs at Three Dots; the great t shirt and clothing company based in Long Beach. The brand famous for its super-soft T's, recently tapped Anvarian as creative director. Anvarian is a Los Angeles-based designer who had her own line from 2002 to 2008 of highly modern designs that balanced hard (leather) and soft (woven fabrics) in a very modern L.A. way, that looked quite European as well. She stepped in as Creative Director of Three Dots in November of 2008, and the fall collection that’s trickling into stores like Ambiance right now is the first full collection that she has created for the brand we all know and love.

"I'm really focused on making the line fashion forward," says the 35-year-old Iranian-American, who grew up in Richardson, Texas and began her fashion career as a stylist for the B-52s.
"I wanted to build pieces that could easily be mixed with designer separates."

Q. "So Pegah, what's the fall 'hot item' must have?"

A. "There’s a seamless legging for fall that’s thicker than Wolford, but you don’t have to squeeze into them, the way you do with Spanx. They retail for about 60 bucks. Wolford ones retail for $250 to $380. I wear them to go to yoga, and they don’t rip, and you can also wear them as tights with boots. Fantastic!"
